The Sand Biodegradable Ocean Footprints in the Sand Mini Cremation Urn is a water burial cremation urn that allows families to create a unique, meaningful and participatory ceremony offshore. The urn is produced using sustainable materials to create an attractive and environmentally-friendly alternative. Each urn is hand-crafted by skilled artisans and has real beach sand (or crushed quartz) applied to the outer surface of the urn.

Each urn includes a biodegradable bag into which the cremated remains are placed. No glue is required to seal the urn. Simply remove the lid, carefully moisten the inside lip and replace the lid. It will seal itself.

Each urn is shipped in a box with custom protective packaging that provides families with a convenient and discreet option for transportation. The box (and urn) will pass through airport security screenings and can fit in the overhead compartment of most commercial airliners.

When buried in the ground, the urn will biodegrade within three months. Once placed in water, the urn will break down within three days.

  • Dimensions: 5.25"H x 5"Dia
  • Capacity: 50 Cubic Inches
  • Airline Travel Safe
  • Biodegradable Inner Bag

  • Features

    • The urn has holes in the bottom to allow water to enter quickly, so that they float only briefly and then gracefully sink when placed into water. The time each urn takes to sink will vary depending on the weight of the cremated remains and local water conditions. Once submerged in water, the urn will break down completely within hours. Federal regulations must be followed when placing the urn at sea (no closer than 3 nautical miles from shore).
    • Includes a water-soluble plastic bag (into which the cremated remains MUST be placed) which dissolves on contact with water. This allows the cremated remains to be dispersed quickly and the urn to remain submerged.

Scattering ashes at sea. The federal Clean Water Act requires that cremated remains be scattered at least three nautical miles from land. If the scattering urn or container will not easily decompose, you must dispose of it separately. The EPA does not permit scattering at beaches or in wading pools by the sea. You must notify the EPA within 30 days of scattering ashes at sea.

The Clean Water Act also governs scattering in inland waters such as rivers, lakes and ponds. For inland water burial, you may be legally required to obtain a permit from the state agency that manages the waterway.

My family and I are using this urn to put messages written on rice paper during my son's memorial last week. The imprint has special meaning for us and I was so comforted to find this urn. Thank you for producing a biodegradable product, although we are not using it for his ashes. He was buried.

At two different times, I have purchased both a large and small version of this urn. The smaller one we used last week to place a portion of the ashes at the same location at sea as where we had put the larger one two years earlier. Both occasions were beautiful. One thing I did on both occasions is Partially glue down the lid so they would not sink instantly when placed in the water; that allowed us time to reflect on the moment. One caution is not to seal it entirely, as it will float for quite a long time before dissolving and sinking on its own. May you remembrance be beautiful as well.

Such an ideal product. The size was perfect for the small amount of ashes we wanted to scatter in San Diego. Thank you.

We used this small urn to scatter a portion of my grandfather's ashes outside of Boston harbor. The urn is well made and functional...and nice looking too.
    • Functional. Well made.

    Useless - Too Small

What's the point of creating and selling something that can't hold the remains of an average person? If indeed this small size is useful to some people, then the website should be crystal clear: NOT LARGE ENOUGH TO HOLD THE REMAINS OF AN AVERAGE PERSON. This way people (who for the most part probably have never shopped for urns before) will at least be informed. Grieving people should not be forced for search to locate any fine print.

I returned this item and had to scramble for a suitable alternative before the service.
Merchant Response:Hello, As the name indicates, this is a mini urn. Biodegradable Ocean Footprints in the Sand "Mini Cremation Urn". I'm sorry there was confusion with size. Urns do come in more than just one size. You are right, this urn holds a portion of ashes and not the ashes of an average adult. We do have a larger size urn that holds the ashes of an adult. The item description states "Capacity: 40 Cubic Inches" and "General rule of thumb is that 1 lb of body weight will yield approximately 1 cubic inch of ash." There is no fine print...but yes we have a comprehensive list of specifications, capacity and size of this urn.
